Wednesday Briefs and some more of Jeff's Way

Hi and welcome to Wednesday Briefs. Where the stories sometimes keep on going and other times they truly are sorts. Join me in the ongoing saga of Jeff and Reese.

This week's prompts were:  "She/he works hard for her/his money..."  (lol  love this song!)
or the alternate prompts are: disco, banana, turtle  or use "macho man" or "If I can't have you..."  or use an inferno (in honor of my favorite disco song, Disco Inferno!)

I used inferno. Enjoy more of Jeff's Way

Jeff jumped from the bed, his breath heaving as he stood across the room. Reese felt cold and alone, his heart hurt like never before. Not even when he found out Cam died did he fell this cold and alone. “Jeff,” he whispered.

“Wait.” Jeff flipped on the light, bring the room out of the darkness. Jeff covered his face with his hands, and dropped to his knees. His shoulders shook and Reese felt tears pooling in his own eyes.

“I swear--God, please just hold me. You don’t have to--I just need someone,” Reese begged.

Jeff dropped his hands from his face, revealing a mask of pain. “I can’t kiss you. Not right now,” Jeff wailed. Jeff crawled to the bed, tears trailing over his cheeks. “I need you to hold me too. But I can’t do anything else because if I did, I would confuse you with Cam and I’d never want to do that to you. If I kiss you, I want to be thinking of only you, not Cam and how much I wanted him.”

Reese sobbed, grabbing a tissue to wipe his face. He’d made a huge error in judgment. “I know. It was stupid.”

“No.” Jeff held on tight to Reese. “I wanted it too. I’m so confused.”

Jeff turned off the light and crawled back into bed, wrapping Reese in his arms.

They snuggled together, crying quietly as they drifted off. At some point Reese woke and sighed, forgetting for a moment that the arms wrapped around him weren’t Cam. Then realization dawned and it felt as though his soul had been sucked out of him. More tears came and Jeff woke. He pushed Reese to his back, Jeff’s fingers feathering over his face. The magic from before filled Reese and he longed for the closeness of a kiss. When Jeff lowered and brushed his lips over Reese’s, the world stopped spinning because Reese felt like he was about to be thrown into outer space.

Reese closed his eyes as the world around him picked up speed. He couldn’t look at Jeff’s face, afraid of what he’d find. Then Jeff traced his fingers over Reese’s pec and Reese couldn’t help but arch up into the delicious touch. Jeff slid his fingers lower over Reese’s abs, circling his bellybutton as they continued kissing,

Reese gulped in a deep breath when Jeff broke the kiss and backed off, his hand still circling Reese’s bellybutton. This was the opposite of not kissing. Butterflies filled his stomach and his heart thrummed wildly. They were kissing, holding each other and about to start doing more if Reese were a good judge of anything.

“One question, before you do anything else. Who do you want me to me? Me or Cam?”

“You Reese, not Cam. I’m hot for you Reese, not Cam. Hot like an inferno ready to burn up this husk of a man. Sure, I’ll miss him, and I’ll regret never taking the first step to get to know him on a deeper level, but yeah, I want you, Reese, no one else.”

Male and Manga Blog Hop

I admit I'm not much into Manga but I am into Male/Male fiction. I love putting two men together and seeing the fireworks. This week I was honored to be entrusted with the release of IRM's first ever anthology, Hot Summer Fun. 10 authors came together to create 10 wonderful stories with the central theme of summer.  It's fun, flirty, fierce in some spots and very much full of sex. Here's a little tidbit from Hot Summer Fun and Working Stiff. I hope you enjoy.

Remember to leave a comment to be entered to win an ecopy of one of my Sara York books.

Excerpt from Working Stiff.

Zach reached out and grabbed Josh’s arm, halting Josh’s steps. He didn’t breathe, didn’t move. He didn’t turn to look at Zach for fear of what he would find. Finally, after a long moment of both of them standing silently together, Zach’s hand burning where he’d made contact, Josh slid his gaze toward Zach, their eyes locked, and it felt as though the ground shook. Zach’s dark stare spoke of lust and wild times--and sex.
Josh gazed into Zach’s eyes, searching for something to grasp onto, a small flicker of deception to indicate Zach didn’t care, or maybe a bit of teasing, or something else, like revile or hate, but he didn’t see any of that. Instead, carnal desire stared back at him, leaving Josh unsure which would be worse, going home not knowing how sweet Zach’s lips tasted or turning and brushing his mouth over Zach’s lush lips.
A bird cawed above and the sounds of animals in the trees around them broke the silence but neither of them moved. Heat grew between them, leaving Josh with a boner that wouldn’t be tamed by the loose shorts he wore. He leaned in, ever so slightly, enough for Zach to know he would return the kiss if offered but not enough he couldn’t save face if Zach pushed back, telling him to fuck off.
Josh noticed the change in Zach’s eyes milliseconds before the guy attacked him, pulling him close, his lips pressing into Josh’s, his hands fumbling for a good spot, turning Josh in the process so they were plastered up against each other. For the first three seconds surprise made Josh stupid. He kept his eyes open, his mouth closed and his body stiff, but after a moment he relaxed into Zach, letting his boss pull him close, opening his mouth and welcoming the swipe of Zach’s tongue. He tasted a hint of coffee and donuts and a good dose of Zach, so sweet and amazing Josh couldn’t help but groan, probably louder than he’d intended to.
Zach pressed in harder, one hand going to the back of Josh’s head, holding him in place. Zach slowed the kiss, the urgency lessened. A trill of excitement wove through Josh when Zach tenderly tugged his earlobe. The kiss ended but Zach didn’t let him go. With foreheads together, Josh breathed in deep, sniffing in the dark and woodsy masculine scent that was Zach. He shivered, his body melting against Zach’s. This man smelled just like a man should smell, exciting the heck out of Josh.

Hot Summer Fun - Are your ready for the fun?

I'm so excited that Hot Summer Fun is now out. You can get it from ARe and Amazon

Here's an excerpt from my story, Working Stiff.

Zachary McCaffrey slung the ladder over his shoulder, hefted his tool belt and sauntered onto the construction lot, exaggerating his cocky gait to show the workers he had his shit together. Being boss rocked, but sometimes the pressure ate at him, bringing sleepless nights to his world and a helplessness he hid from everyone, especially here at the build site. When he’d been just another carpenter his weaknesses didn’t matter, but now he had to be the badass construction foreman, all knowing and capable of solving every crisis. He had to prove he knew his stuff and could do it better than everyone else.
A sweet red BMW pulled up out in front of the construction site and stopped. Great, just what he needed, some desk dork coming down here to tell him how to do his job. Stupid jerk. He didn’t need a babysitter and the implication that corporate didn’t trust him hurt. Sure, this was his first big assignment, coordinating the build for this two hundred unit apartment complex had him worried, but he sure as hell wouldn’t admit his fear here, not at the build site.
The door to the red Bimmer opened, revealing long legs clad in jeans. Zach’s gaze traveled up the slope of those legs, taking in the trim waist and the nicely muscled pecs underneath a simple white T-shirt. Loving the shape of this desk dork’s body, he reigned in his libido, willing his cock to obey. The man stood tall and removed his sunglasses, revealing beautiful green eyes. Zach swallowed, his throat going dry. Crap, total hottie on-site. But Zach wouldn’t fall victim to another drama filled dating adventure, and dating a guy from corporate screamed drama.
Bimmer guy bent into his car, giving Zach a glimpse of the most gorgeous ass he’d seen in a long while. When the guy stood he had a construction hat in hand and slid it on before moving toward Zach. At least the desk dork knew enough to wear a proper lid.
“Can I help you with something?” Zach asked, praying he’d been wrong about corporate and this dude just happened to be in the wrong place, but with the construction hat, the guy probably meant to be here. If the cute desk dork were here by mistake, he’d ask mister gorgeous out.
Bimmer stuck out his hand, reaching for a shake. Zach dropped his tool belt and grasped hands with the hottie. As their skin touched an arc of electricity buzzed between them surprising the hell out of Zach. Holy fucking shit! He hadn’t had such a strong reaction to another guy in ages. Bimmer must have sensed the connection too because he wrenched his hand free and stepped back, his eyes going to his hand then to Zach’s.
Zach stared blankly at the desk dork, hoping to cover his electrifying reaction with a lack of interest. The dude’s gaze flashed to Zach, leaving him wishing he’d met this guy anywhere but here. Zach had visions of mountains with fresh streams and taking a tumble with Bimmer in a field of grass, pushing him to the ground and riding him till he screamed with delight. Fuck, I need to get laid.
“I’m Josh Rand, I’m here for the job.”
The air sucked out of Zach’s lungs. This guy couldn’t be here for the job. For one, carpenters in Paris Texas, no matter how good they were, didn’t own nice rides like the car Josh drove. And this guy looked too good, tanned but not overly so, his skin still appeared soft like he had a desk job instead of being out in the elements all day. Hell no, this guy wouldn’t last a week. Fuck, he wasn’t even supposed to be here till next Monday. Then there was the attraction issue. Zach had already mentally stripped the guy and fucked him in his fantasies. Hell, if he had to spend any length of time with this beauty he’d be so screwed.
Why had he agreed to hire this dude? No way he’d survive working with Josh Rand, but he’d made a promise and he stood by his word. He sure as hell couldn’t toss the guy to the street, especially not after vowing to Mike, his sister’s husband, he would hire his cousin who was out of work. Shit, this was bad and he needed an out. He asked even though he knew the answer, “You ever work construction before?”
“Yes sir, it’s been a few years, but I know what I’m doing.”
Zach didn’t want this guy here, not on his first big build. Fuck, Josh had him getting hard just by being near. “Get plenty of guys who say that.”
Bimmer held up his hand, “I know construction, I know how hammers work and what a nail is for. It’s a cake walk.” Josh winked and took the ladder from Zach. “Where you want this stairway to heaven?” Josh’s face turned pink. “Not that I have a Jacob’s lad--never mind.”
Zach cocked his head to the side, having no idea what Bimmer was talking about. Images of an overly pierced guy flashed into his mind and realization struck. Zach let loose a booming laugh, liking this Josh guy more and more each minute he spent with him. After he recovered he slapped Bimmer on the back of the shoulder. “Put it over there, we’re working on building six in the back. My name is Zach, Zach McCaffrey, the foreman for this little site.”
Josh smiled before walking off, careful not to swing the ladder into Zach. The way the guy moved showed swagger, and what the hell had Josh really meant by that little Jacob’s ladder comment? Did the dude have piercings? Was he gay, or did he mean he didn’t do dick? Zach was sure the guy swung that way, maybe he hadn’t had a man with piercings, or maybe he had piercings... Oh hell, he needed to stop thinking about how cute Bimmer’s ass was in jeans and how he’d like to kiss that sassy mouth. Considering how flippantly he’d made the comment about a Jacob’s ladder, Zach figured Josh would be a fun date. But fuck him silly, he couldn’t date the men he worked with, he was the boss.

Advice for New Authors and Writers

Whether you consider yourself an author or just a writer playing at writing a book, you need to know a few things. This post is based on a few questions that have come up on FB and in forums. If you have any more questions or concerns please comment or send me an email.

1. There is no correct method to write a book. I personally always use a computer. You can use pen or pencil and paper if you like. When you turn in your book you must follow the publishers standards, which means its going to have to be typed at some point, but you can do that once your story is done.

2. There is no correct way to develop your story. Plot it out till you have over 100 pages of notes or wing it, not even knowing what you will type until your fingers strike the keys on the keyboard. Just write. You can write the first chapter then the fifth then jump to the end and finally go back and write the second chapter. You can write straight through, never breaking from your sequence. It doesn't matter as long as the final product is clear to the reader.

3. Never, and this is a big one, NEVER-EVER pay to get your book published by a publisher. Yes, I self publish a few of my titles and I must pay for art work, editing and a few minor odds and ends, but real publishers do not charge you a dime. So if you submit and they say, Sure, we'll publish you for $1000, RUN as fast as you can the other way. Look at Preditors and Editors or here. Both of these sites will give you the low down on publishers and editors. Please ask in forums or on FB if you don't know. But always look on Preditors and Editors if you don't know the publisher before you submit.

4. Always follow publisher standards. Most publishers have something on their website about submission guidelines. If they call for Times New Roman 12, don't submit in Lucida Calligraphy 10 point. Really, the editors won't think it's cute. They want to know if you can follow directions. Once you sign the contract, the process of editing your book will begin. You must be able to follow your editor’s directions when doing the multiple rounds of edits. They have to know if you are going to be too difficult to work with. Editors do a tremendous amount of work. Don't try to piss them off just because you think you are special.

5. Have a good attitude. There have been a few major blow-ups in the blog sphere and on Goodreads. I know, when reviewers say things about your book you want to take it personally. But really, it's not personal. And if the reviewer does make it personal, just ignore them. You can't win. You'll end up looking like an idiot. Just let it roll off your back. Think about movie reviewers. They pan movies all the time, saying bad thing about flicks that come out and putting down the actors and the directors. It's part of the entertainment business. At least you don't have paparazzi tailing you, trying to get a bad shot of your butt or your face. Get over yourself and allow the reviewer to have their opinion.

6. Find a group of people you jell with and be nice. Don't stab them in the back on social media. If you have to be mean about something someone did to you, just tell it to a personal friend or your SO. This is a business, not high school. Be level headed because what ever you think another writer did to you isn't worth you being a jerk. Let it go. I'm not talking about plagiarism, but the dramatic spats that come up from time to time on FB and other social outlets. Don't be a drama queen.

Wednesday Briefs and the ongoing saga of Jeff

Welcome to Wednesday Briefs, a place for fun, drama, angst and happy endings. I took a break last week as we moved across country. I'm exhausted but having fun in our new location. So now that I'm back, I'm going to continue on with Jeff's story.

Each week I receive the prompts then write almost 1000 words. Here are the prompts for this week: "You can't be serious!" The alternate prompts are: Use: night light, messy bed, TV remote or "Let the chips fall where they may..." or animalistic sounds, water, bowl full of apples  or Mention a birdbath in the story.

I used "You can't be serious!"

Enjoy, Jeff's way.

Jeff used the toothbrush Reese let him borrow, wasting time brushing and rebrushing his teeth. The bed was a double, not a queen and not a king. At least it wasn’t a twin. He opened the door and stepped out to see Reese stripped down to his boxer briefs, his back to Jeff. You can’t be serious? Is what he wanted to say. “I probably should take a Motrin or something before bed.”

“You did drink a bit much. I’ll grab you a glass of water. There’s painkillers in the bathroom.”

Jeff watched Reese leave the bedroom, his fingernails digging into his hands. For Cam he would do this. How could he not be kind to Cam’s brother--Cam’s twin--An exact duplicate of the one man he found so attractive he wanted to get to know on a deeper level.

Reese came back and handed Jeff a glass of water. He popped two pills into his mouth and sipped from the glass. Reese went into the bathroom and shut the door. He was acting like this wasn’t a big deal and maybe Jeff was making too big of a deal about it. Reese was fine with them sleeping in the same bed which meant he should be fine with it too. Reese needed comfort and wasn’t looking for anything else. Assuming that the man was trying to hook up was wrong. He was such a pervert, even thinking of taking advantage of Reese was wrong.

Jeff stripped down to this underwear and lay down under the covers. He curled up on his side, facing the center of the bed. The door cracked open and the light turned off. He heard Reese’s footsteps on the carpet behind him then at the foot of the bed. The bed creaked and dipped as Reese lay down. He rolled over, facing Jeff, his hands sought out Jeff’s hands.

“Hey, thanks for indulging me in this.”

“Sure,” Jeff said. His stomach twisted and he wondered if it was the drinks he’d had or more.

“Roll over, please.”

Jeff complied and did his best not to stiffen when Reese cradled him in his arms and spooned him, lying so close Jeff could feel every inch of Reese. His breathing sped up and his mind spun. He should tell Reese he couldn’t do this, that he felt like he was betraying Cam’s memory. Reese breathed in deeply, sniffing at Jeff’s hair.

“Mmmm, you smell great.”

Jeff shivered. “Reese.”

“Shhh, just let me hold you. I swear I’ll try to behave.”

Jeff’s breathing grew more unsteady the longer Reese held onto him. His dick was rock hard and he feared what Reese would do if he figured out Jeff was getting a boner from being together like this. “Reese?”

“Yes Jeff.”

“You’re driving me crazy.”

Reese moved a bit away from Jeff but didn’t let him stay where he was. Instead, Reese tugged at Jeff’s shoulder, forcing him to roll towards him. There was enough moonlight and streetlights filtering in for Jeff to stare into Reese’s eyes, revealing the emotions there.

“Jeff, I want to kiss you. Do you think that would be okay?”

Jeff froze. He’d so wanted to kiss Cam and this would be almost like kissing Cam, but he didn’t want to kiss Reese for that reason. He wanted to kiss this man because he wanted Reese. The more he thought about it the more he liked the idea of kissing Reese.

Excerpt -

Chapter 1

Metallic screeching, ripping, and squealing erupted down the hall, echoing through the building. “What the hell was that?” Amy Sundowsky shoved the tranq gun into her pocket and ran a few steps down the hall towards the commotion. Turning a corner she saw the first of the wounded. Pain exploded in her frontal lobe and wrapped around her head, blanketing her in a haze of nausea and throbbing. She dropped to her knees, smacking the floor with her hands.
An awful moan rose up at the end of the hall followed by the loud clang of metal, sending another wave of pain through her skull. She suffered a glance, wincing from the shards of light bouncing off the back of her cornea. Someone was dead. She just didn’t know whom. Blood, guts, grey matter, it all congealed on the floor and splashed up on the walls, leaving the hospital looking more like a war zone.
Someone stood on the end of a gurney, his teeth flashed red. A cut raked across his face exposing muscle and bone. His neck gushed blood, and he looked like the walking dead. Gruesome.
Amy closed her eyes then opened them to see him spring off the back of the gurney and run as his blood flew from his cuts and splattered her face, eyes and mouth. She gagged. The wounded moaned and Amy sprung into action. She army crawled to the first nurse crumpled on the hard tile. The cut along her jaw wasn’t the issue, but the gaping hole in her head poured blood like a sieve. Damn, this was tough.
Amy reached out with a shaky hand to check for a pulse she knew wouldn’t be there. Her hand was almost on the nurse when she pulled back. Protection first. One hallmark that had kept her safe, all doctors really, were the gloves and masks she donned like body armor. Fear skittered around her body. This was why she was here, to feel something, even fear.
With her hand on the nurse she searched for a pulse, nothing. “Damn, she’s dead.” Amy paused to close the nurse’s eyes.
“Amy, move on. Do Janice next then check the security guard,” Brad Herlinger called over his shoulder.
She glanced at Janice and cringed. The woman looked like she’d been hit by a car. Blood soaked her shoulder and ran from her nose, one of her legs twisted unnaturally, her foot pointing the wrong way. Janice didn’t have the best reputation with the doctors, but Amy wouldn’t wish this kind of terror on anyone.
“I’ve got a pulse. I need a gurney.” Amy glanced at the guard beside Janice, his face was smashed and grey matter oozed out of his skull. A laceration at his neck no longer flowed with blood. She touched where his pulse should be, hoping to find life still in his body, but she felt nothing. He was gone.
Amy turned back to Janice, and did everything she could to stop the flow of blood from her chest. Someone tossed a towel and Amy wiped the blood from Janice’s face. There were no cuts around her nose, only the laceration on her head. Janice might make it. She called for two young orderlies who wheeled the nurse away to an operating room where two of the best surgeons in the hospital would work to put her back together.
The crunch of the body bags zippers tore at Amy’s nerves. She didn’t want to think about the dead. Two nurses and three security guards had been taken to the morgue. Her heart tugged in her chest as an orderly pushed the last of the dead into the elevator. What a bad start to another long shift.
Her head ached, and her body hurt. She didn’t want to be here. A few months ago, when Brad had approached her about working once a week, she’d jumped at the chance, now she wondered if she should have stayed in the psych ward where life was more predictable.
On the other end of the ER the injured were being treated and would probably spend weeks in intensive care, if they lived. Her shoulders slumped under the emotional weight. She pulled at the protective gear, tossing it into the waiting laundry hamper.
“Bad night,” the nurse on duty said when Amy stopped off at the desk to check the charts.
“Yeah, not good. I’m taking lunch now.”
“You go on. I’ll mark you down on the log sheet as out. Get something refreshing, you look like hell.”
“Thanks.” Amy wandered outside, passed the smokers bench and headed for the woodsy park next to the hospital. Normally she would hang out at the coffee bar, sampling delicious pastries and chatting with other doctors, but tonight she needed to clear her mind.
The megawatt lights in the park chased the night away. She wished a few of the bulbs would go out so she could see the stars, but the over bright park was a safe haven in the big city. She made her way to a small bench not far from the huge gazebo. This was the place where she’d told Brad it was over. She didn’t want to think about Brad or anything else. All she wanted was a few minutes to recharge amongst the trees and rose bushes.
How had her life gotten to this point? She felt almost nothing at the loss of others. Her heart squeezing in her chest as the dead had been wheeled away was a good sign, but still there was an empty place that scared the hell out of her.
Lowering slowly to the seat, she closed her eyes, taking in a deep breath. Hands were on her, grabbing her under the arms. Her breath left in a whoosh as her heart hammered in her chest. Trying to remember what they’d taught her in self-defense class, Amy strained to scream but only a squeak came out. She flailed her arms at the hands clutching her shoulders. Her fingers slipped off his wrists and there was nothing else to grab onto. She was helpless against the hold on her.
It felt as though she were flying through the air. She twisted against the tight grip, but the chinch hold only intensified. When her legs finally hit the ground tall bushes surrounded them. The walking paths were lost to her, she could have been anywhere in the park, only the bright lights above assured her that he hadn’t taken her far. The man holding her down snapped his fingers and the lights went out, turning the park inky black.
Fear caught her breath. She couldn’t see the bastard who’d locked her in his grip and flew her over the bushes into this hellhole, but she sure as heck would make some fist to face contact as soon as she could see his face. Could the patient from the hall have not been as injured as she thought? Amy scrambled to her feet. Bushes blocked her exit at every turn. There was nowhere to go. The sound of metal rasping against leather brought her to a stop. Feelings of bravado fled. She was alone with a madman with no way out.
Hell, she was trapped.
